Hydrogen measurements

RMG Messtechnik GmbH has decades of experience in the field of hydrogen measurement. Since the 1960s, we have developed applications that work with both pure hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas mixtures. Our expertise covers numerous gas types and different mixing ratios, which enables us to offer high-precision measurement solutions for a wide range of applications.

Our RGQ 5 and RGQ 3 devices enable precise and reliable analysis of hydrogen and hydrogen mixtures. The RGQ 5 is optimized for stationary applications, while the RGQ 3 as a mobile "little brother" offers the same functionality in a portable format. Both devices are specially designed for measuring the Wobbe index and other relevant parameters such as calorific value and density. They are complemented by the RGC 7 process gas chromatograph, which is ideal for the comprehensive analysis of hydrogen mixtures and their composition. The RGC 7 is calibratable and provides precise data for industrial applications.

Hydrogen measurements are a central component of modern energy technologies, as green hydrogen in particular is playing an increasingly important role in the energy transition. The measurement of hydrogen in its pure form or as a component of gas mixtures requires special expertise and adapted technologies. With our many years of experience and innovative measurement techniques, we are able to carry out reliable and precise measurements that meet the increasing demands of industry.
Highest precision: Exact measurements for hydrogen and gas mixtures.
Future-proof: metering solutions for the requirements of the energy transition.
Verified accuracy: Proven technology for hydrogen and mixed gases.
Many years of experience: Over 60 years of expertise in hydrogen measurement technology.
Suitable for industrial use: Robust systems for demanding environments.
Versatile applications: Customizable appliances for all gas types and mixing ratios.

How does hydrogen measurement work in industry?

Hydrogen measurement in an industrial environment places special demands on system solutions for gas measurement technology. On the one hand, hydrogen has a standard density that is up to eight times lower and, on the other, a speed of sound that is up to four times higher, which presents different requirements in terms of measurement technology than natural gas measurement. In addition, hydrogen has a significantly lower energy density compared to natural gas. While the calorific value of hydrogen is around 12.745 MJ/m³, that of natural gas is up to 46 MJ/m³. These differences require adapted measurement technologies to ensure accurate and reliable analyses.

RMG Messtechnik GmbH relies on technologies that have been tried and tested over many years. Our turbine meters are fully suitable for hydrogen and provide precise measurement results for volume measurement. Ultrasonic meters are currently being tested in various pilot projects for 100% hydrogen, while they have already been successfully verified for mixtures of up to 40% hydrogen and natural gas. Our flow computers, which are also approved for pure gases such as hydrogen, also play a central role in precise energy measurement.

RMG Messtechnik GmbH offers a comprehensive range of devices for gas analysis, including the RGQ 5, the RGQ 3 and the RGC 7, which are specially designed for the different requirements of hydrogen and mixed gas measurement. The RGQ 5 and RGQ 3 enable fast and precise determination of the Wobbe index, while the RGC 7 impresses with its ability to perform comprehensive gas analysis and provide essential data such as the calorific value, methane number or Wobbe number.

Hydrogen measurement technology for the energy transition

Hydrogen measurements play a crucial role in many industrial applications, particularly with regard to the energy transition and the increased use of hydrogen as an alternative energy source. RMG Messtechnik GmbH offers customized solutions for the precise measurement of hydrogen volume, energy content and gas composition.

Maximum accuracy is essential for volume measurement, as hydrogen has special requirements due to its low energy density compared to natural gas. RMG's turbine meters, which are already fully hydrogen-compatible, enable reliable volume measurements under a wide range of conditions.

Energy measurement is also a key aspect, as the calorific value of hydrogen is significantly lower than that of natural gas. The RMG flow computers, which have been successfully used in pure gas applications for years, provide accurate results and meet the high requirements of the industry.

Finally, gas quality measurement plays an important role in analyzing and monitoring the composition of hydrogen and hydrogen-natural gas mixtures. The RGQ 5, RGQ 3 and RGC 7 are used for this purpose, all of which impress with their precision, reliability and user-friendly operation. The RGC 7, as a process gas chromatograph, provides particularly comprehensive analyses and is an indispensable instrument for legal-for-trade applications.

Our solutions combine precise measurement methods with many years of experience to meet the growing demands of hydrogen technology.

Compared to natural gas, hydrogen has a much lower energy density.

This results in different requirements for volume and energy measurement.

Our turbine meters are 100% hydrogen compatible. The ultrasonic meters are in tests at 100% H2 gas in various pilot plants. At 40% H2 mixed gases the ultrasonic meters are already verified. Due to the approval incl. Beattie & Bridgeman, the flow computers have already been in use for many years in pure gases. For gas analysis RMG Messtechnik GmbH offers a very wide range of instruments for different requirements.
