Hydrogen - volume measurement

Based on the wide range of natural gas volume measurement, RMG offers a selection of devices suitable for the measurement of natural gas with hydrogen admixtures and/or for measurements of pure hydrogen.

Due to the complex and dynamic approval situation, we distinguish in the following between:

  • the technical suitability. Then the devices have the appropriate ATEX approval; the materials are suitable for hydrogen, an appropriate leak test is carried out and the measuring accuracy of the devices can be expected.

  • Permissible applications. Then the devices are not only technically suitable in the above sense, but harmlessness certificates, type approvals or manufacturer's declarations in accordance with the PTB guideline TRG-19 are available.

Depending on the hydrogen concentration, the device families may be approved for certain applications or "only" technically suitable. In these cases, the permissibility for custody transfer operation must be clarified on a case-by-case basis with the responsible weights and measures office.

The following device families are available:
USM-GT400 Series Ultrasonic Gas Meter
a) Hydrogen admixtures of up to 30 mol% are permissible in accordance with the clearance certificate. No restriction of performance compared to natural gas measurements.

b) Measurement of pure hydrogen: Special versions are currently undergoing field trials. Measurement ranges that are different from those for natural gas are to be expected.

Turbine meter TRZ03
a) Hydrogen admixtures of up to 30 mol% are permissible in accordance with the clearance certificate. No restriction of performance compared to natural gas measurements.

b) Technically suitable for measuring pure hydrogen: Measuring ranges changed compared to natural gas are to be expected (correction via Reynolds number required).

a) Technically suitable for hydrogen admixtures up to 100 mol% without restriction of performance compared to natural gas measurements.

b) Technically suitable for measuring pure hydrogen: Compared to natural gas, changed measuring ranges are to be expected (correction via Reynolds number required).
