China is presently building a second West-East Pipeline to cover future natural gas demands in the great metropolitan regions of Shanghai and Hong Kong. The project is estimated at 20 billion dollars. Project manager is China National Petroleum Corp. When finished, the new pipeline will boost China's natural gas consumption from 2.5 to 5.3 %, which will improve China's environmental records by reducing CO2 emissions.
The "Second West-East Gas Pipeline Project" (WEPP 2) will bring natural gas from the autonomous region Xinjiang Uygur and from Turkmenistan to the delta areas of the Yangtze (Shanghai) and Pearl Rivers (Hong Kong) to supply energy to millions of people. WEPP 2 is the first Chinese project that involves the import of energy from another country. Total length including all branch lines will be 9,102 kilometres or 5,656 miles approx. Construction started in February 2008. WEPP 2 will consist of a trunk line and eight branch lines that will cross twelve Chinese provinces and autonomous regions. The designed annual transmission volume will exceed 30 billion cubic metres. WEPP 2 is planned to be operational in 2011.
Project management is in the hands of China National Petroleum Corp. (CNPC), presently the largest extractive company in China. Total investment for this project has been estimated at more than 20 billion dollars.
