WINGAS GmbH & Co. KG has awarded the contract to measure and meter natural-gas volumes and qualities on the Nord Stream Pipeline (OPAL and NEL) to RMG Regel + Messtechnik GmbH. The task is critical. When the pipeline goes into operation, enormous amounts of gas will have to be measured and metered. The completion and commissioning phase is scheduled to begin in October 2011.
Starting in 2012, the Nord Stream Pipeline will revolutionise energy supply to Europe. Two parallel legs, each about 1,220 kilometres long, will carry natural gas from Russia to the European Union.
The intention is to secure the future natural-gas demand of the EU member states thanks to a direct link between Russia and Germany. Starting in 2011, this offshore pipeline will deliver gas from Vyborg in Russia through the Baltic Sea to Lubmin near Greifswald (Germany). Construction relies on the latest technologies and safety & security measures. After their completion, the two parallel legs will be the longest "pipe in the water" in the world, covering more than 1,200 kilometres and carrying 55 billion cubic metres of natural gas per year, providing safe energy to more than 25 million households in Europe.
Total investment in this project will exceed 7 billion Euros.
